Dance to the Rhythm by the Roundhouse Choir

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Roundhouse Sound & Song has developed an online collaborative songwriting practice grounded in individual soundwalks. Participants use soundwalking to gather lyrical material for an original song, and write the song together through weekly online sessions led by composer Leah Abramson. For Dance to the Rhythm, Leah and the group invited choreographer Veronica Berezowsky (who leads Arts & Health’s Moving Stories project), Remix artist Kyle Cashen, and Video artist danielle Mackenzie Long to help them transform their sound and create this video. For a step by step guide for how to do this kind of work, visit Leah’s project page at the Canadian New Music Participatory Music Hub, where you can explore many participatory music projects.

Sing With Us by the Roundhouse Choir

Sing With Us is an original song written online by The Roundhouse Choir through Sound & Song, in Winter 2020/Spring 2021. Instead of meeting weekly at the Roundhouse Community Centre — as they have since 2017 — the group moved online at the start of the COVID19 pandemic to keep writing and singing together.

Sound & Song program participants develop original songs by going on soundwalks together and sharing their observations through a collaborative group writing process. Since COVID19, group members have done individual soundwalks and recorded audio/video and taken photos to share online in order to generate discussion and new lyrics. Some of these images and videos are shared in the music video above. More information on soundwalks from Hildegaard Westercamp at: https://www.hildegardwesterkamp.ca/so…
